GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Background.  Over five thousand Marines have been selected for screening to fill projected Special Duty Assignments (SDA) vacancies in FY18.  These assignments include Recruiting Duty, Drill Instructor Duty, Combat Instructor Duty, Marine Security Guard Detachment Commander Duty, and Marine Corps Security Forces Duty.  Additionally, on or about 15 May 2017, over one thousand first-term Marines will be selected for screening as Marine Security Guard Watch Standers.  Upon commanders screening and review by the HSST, qualified Marines will be assigned to the SDAs based on their preference, commanders recommendations, and individual qualifications.
2.  From 1 to 28 June 2017, selected members of the HSST, augmented by SDA Formal Schools representatives, will conduct information briefs and interact with Marines selected to SDAs in order to reduce attrition associated with inadequate personal, professional, and family readiness.  This attrition is normally associated with lack of understanding of the SDA assignments process and inadequate personal, professional, and family preparation in the months before reporting for service on an SDA.  MMEA will aim to reduce unnecessary attrition by improving screening processes, ensuring that Marines understand the benefits of serving on an SDA, and open the communication channels between the Marines and HQMC.  This will be accomplished through a series of briefs at major Marine Corps installations by the SDA monitors and SDA school representatives.  At the conclusion of the HSST Roadshow Marines will better understand their assigned duty and will adequately prepare themselves and their families for service on SDA.
3.  Prior to the Roadshow, the HSST will make final assignments of qualified Marines to SDA classes.  The Roadshow will include daily briefs by MMEA SDA monitors and SDA Formal Schools representatives, followed by a “Question and Answer” period and opportunity for one-on-one interaction with students and their leadership.  After the Roadshow the monitors will make final modifications to class assignments, as requested in official correspondence to HQMC (MMEA-25).
