GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  This message announces available training seats for Marines to attend the January 2018 Music Unit Leader course (CID N0355L2) at the Naval School of Music (NAVSOM) aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia Beach, Virginia. This message is provided as a planning tool for commands to nominate Marines for attendance.
2.  This course provides instruction on rehearsing and conducting ceremonial bands, rehearsing and conducting popular music groups, performing the duties of Drum Major for ceremonial bands, analyzing and writing advanced music, and performing technical and non-technical support for performances.
3.  Prerequisites.
3.a.  5524 Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).
3.b.  Completion of the Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) Basic Music course
(catalog codes: CSS-SOM-210-1.0, CSS-SOM-220-1.0,
CSS-SOM-230-1.0, CSS-SOM-240-1.0, CSS-SOM-310-1.0,
CSS-SOM-320-1.0, CSS-SOM-410-1.0, CSS-SOM-420-1.0,
CSS-SOM-510-1.0, CSS-SOM-520-1.0, CSS-SOM-530-1.0,
CSS-SOM-610-1.0, CSS-SOM-620-1.0, CSS-SOM-630-1.0,
CSS-SOM-640-1.0, CSS-SOM-650-1.0).
4.  Nomination packages will consist of:
4.a.  Marine Corps Music Training Seats Screening Sheet.
4.b.  Current copy of Basic Training Record (BTR).
4.c.  NKO Training Transcript.
5.  2018010 class schedule.
5.a.1.  Report date is 05 January 2018.
5.a.2.  Convene date is 08 January 2018.
5.a.3.  Graduation date is 09 August 2018.
5.b.  Available seats: 6.
6.  In accordance with Ref (a), this course is a prerequisite for selection to Enlisted Conductor (5519), Drum Major (5521), and Small Ensemble Leader (5522).
7.  All nominations will be submitted to Office of Marine Corps Communication, Marine Corps Music no later than 2359 EST 18 June 2017. In the event more nominations are received than seats available, a selection panel will convene on or about 19 June 2017 to determine the most qualified applicants for attendance.
