SUBJ/INDEPENDENCE DAY//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Every 4th of July, Americans celebrate our independence and the freedoms we enjoy.  On Independence Day, we also honor the memory of the many courageous men and women who have fought to protect those freedoms.  For Marines, this is a time to demonstrate our pride in service and to rededicate ourselves to the ideals we are charged with defending.
2.  The Marine Corps is America's expeditionary force in readiness.  Maintaining our readiness is a priority that requires the efforts and vigilance of every Marine and Sailor in our ranks.  As you celebrate this year, be mindful of threats to that readiness and make wise choices.  Respect the threats, especially while traveling.  Your fellow Marines and Sailors are counting on you to make good decisions and return from the holiday safely and prepared to train hard again.  Take care of each other and do your best to ensure other Marines and Sailors are not taking unnecessary risks.
3.  Have a great holiday weekend; you've earned it.  Make a plan, arrive safely, and Protect What You've Earned.
4.  Semper Fidelis, Robert B. Neller, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
