GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  National Hispanic American Heritage Month recognizes the importance of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States and Armed Forces.  The Marine Corps will celebrate National Hispanic American Heritage Month from 15 September - 15 October.
2.  Hispanics have had a profound influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, and service.  They have enhanced our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multicultural customs of their community.  We celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.  The 15th of September has much significance, as it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries:  Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  The theme for this years National Hispanic American Heritage Month is:  "Shaping the bright future of America."
3.  Hispanic Americans have continuously distinguished themselves in the Marine Corps.  These proud patriots have served honorably in every war since the founding of our Nation.  They bear unique qualities and cultural backgrounds that strengthen our Corps and our Nation.  Twelve Marines of Hispanic descent have been awarded the Medal of Honor and most recently, three were awarded the Navy Cross during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
4.  Commanders are encouraged to take time to increase awareness and celebrate the dedicated service and contributions of Hispanic Americans to our country and Corps.  Commands are further encouraged to conduct programs and promote participation in observance events in the local community.
5.  Release authorized by Brigadier General S. F. Benedict, Division Director, Manpower Plans and Policy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs.//
