GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  On behalf of all Marines, it is my pleasure to congratulate our fellow sea service on the occasion of their 228th birthday on 4 August.
2.  The United States Coast Guard holds the honorable distinction as our nation's oldest sea service.  Your proud heritage stretches from the earliest days of our republic in the age of sail through to today's rapid technological expansion.
3.  Coastguardsmen carried Marines ashore in time of war, saved lives from the deep, protected our coastline against drug smugglers and aided in the fight against terrorism.  Yours is a diverse mission wrought with perils at every turn, created by nature and man alike.  Wherever the call of duty finds you today as you celebrate this milestone, know that all Marines salute you for your courage on the high seas, your unfailing devotion to protecting our shores and citizens, as well as the sacrifices you have made serving our great nation.  There is no doubt that the United States Coast Guard is the epitome of their motto, "Semper Paratus!"
