SUBJ/MEMORIAL DAY SAFETY MESSAGE//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Memorial Day was originally established as Decoration Day to honor the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Civil War.  Since 1971, Memorial Day has been an occasion to pay tribute to and memorialize all who have died in defense of the nation and the uniquely American way of life.  As we pause to pay tribute to the heroes who died while defending us, we should consider and reflect on the meaning of their sacrifice.  The freedom that we enjoy as Americans is the legacy of our fallen comrades.  Today, it is Marines and Sailors such as yourselves, who are willing to risk all for their countrymen and uphold this ancient legacy for the next generation.
2.  Memorial Day also signals the beginning of summer, a time to enjoy leisure activities, to travel, and to spend time with family and friends.  Many of us will drive more miles in heavier traffic than normal, which increases our risk of being involved in an accident.  Avoiding peak travel times, not driving fatigued or impaired, and putting your cell phone down will help you arrive safely.
3.  Enjoy recreational activities by employing the buddy system for protection and mutual accountability.  This is especially important when engaging in activities in and around the water.  Water related accidents rank second behind motor vehicle mishaps for off duty injuries.
4.  Take care of each other and make smart decisions.  Our nation needs you ready to go when the call for action comes.  Thank you to all who faithfully serve our nation.
5.  Semper Fidelis, Robert B. Neller, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
