GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  For over 245 years, Marines have adapted to evolving expectations, including adopting and demonstrating an environmental ethos to protect our families, surrounding communities, and our lands for training.  Our natural and cultural resources are essential for sustaining the Marine Corps of today and the future.  Individual actions play a significant role in protecting the environment and our operational mission.  As the Marine Corps progresses through a redesign of its operational capabilities, we must incorporate stewardship of our natural and cultural resources and entrusted land as essential elements of our planning.
2.  Earth Day 2021 is an exceptional opportunity to evaluate each of our own actions and how we can better support Marine Corps environmental goals and in doing so, our mission.  While COVID-19 has now impacted plans across two Aprils and Earth Days, it is Marine Corps ethos to adapt and overcome all hurdles.  I ask that we find safe ways to come together digitally (or physically with safety protocols in place) and celebrate what Earth Day means to the Marine Corps.  I fully support each installation’s actions to increase awareness of our environmental responsibilities, initiatives, and our ongoing commitment to protect our installations and local communities.  I encourage all commands, following local safety guidelines, to use this opportunity to engage with and inform base personnel and surrounding communities alike, about your outstanding environmental stewardship activities.
3.  Sustainable installations begin with each of us.  I encourage everyone to seek information about actions you can take to support environmental management efforts on your installation and in the surrounding communities.  During this challenging time and as we return to normal, simple changes can have meaningful impacts:  properly disposing of all trash and hazardous materials and waste; following all fueling/filling procedures and quickly addressing all spills; minimizing hazardous materials and cleaners that are not needed; controlling lead by keeping rounds on target; thoroughly policing brass to recycle; turning off unused lights and electrical devices; carpooling, busing, or riding a bicycle to work; using reusable bags, water bottles, coffee cups, and silverware; using sustainable alternatives to pesticides; and ensuring we each understand our obligations to protect our natural and cultural resources.  Management practices like these minimize pollution and associated cleanup costs, protect the health of our forces and surrounding communities, and help to protect lands for future training.
4.  Earth Day 2021 is an opportunity to reflect on our mission, our environment, and the need to preserve our resources for future generations of Marines so we can continue to win our country’s battles.  Additional information related to Earth Day can be found at:  www.epa.gov/earthday.
