GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. This MARADMIN solicits Marines to Lateral Move into Military Occupational Specialiaty (MOS) 0681 Information Security Technician (IST).
2. ISTs serve as the Marine Corps’ primary functional proponent for the Department of the Navy's (DON) Communications Security (COMSEC) and cryptographic key management. These Marines provide day-to-day operation of the DON's COMSEC material control system. Their duties include; coordination for the provisioning of symmetric and asymmetric key products to support Command, Control, Communications, and Computers systems in collaboration with communications planners for the development of communications instructions, providing information regarding new or revised COMSEC policies and procedures and their impact on the command. Train and inspect COMSEC users within the command. Monitor and maintain the command COMSEC material allowances; and perform spot checks of users to assess adherence to prescribed instructions. Billet specific applications may serve as a central office of record auditor for COMSEC account inspections.
3. Marines will be assigned the MOS upon completion of one of the listed approved courses in subparagraph (b) below. Marines in this MOS may be assigned to a billet identification code that has been coded with one or more Department of Defense (DoD) cyber workforce framework work role codes. Please reference DoD Instruction 8140.10, DoD Manual 8140.10, and the MOS roadmap for additional training and certification requirements associated with these work role codes.
3.a. Prerequisites:
3.a.1. Must be a United States citizen.
3.a.2. Must possess a general technical score of 100 or higher.
3.a.3. Must be selected for the rank of Staff Sergeant and not having been passed twice in current grade.
3.a.4. Security requirement: top secret security clearance eligibility.
3.b. Requirements:
3.b.1. Candidate must complete the Key Management Infrastructure (KMI) course of instruction (COI) at one of the following training commands:
3.b.1.a. Camp Pendleton, California (M10DR2B)
3.b.1.b. Camp Lejeune, North Carolina (M03DR2G)
3.b.1.c. Camp Butler, Okinawa, Japan (M22DR24)
Note: Marines desiring to attend a DON run KMI course of instruction must coordinate that training with one of the communications training centers listed above.
3.b.2. All prerequisites and requirements can be waived for exceptional applicants by the 06XX communications occupational field manager. Submit waiver requests to the point of contact listed in this MARADMIN.
4. Active component must have 24 months obligated service remaining upon graduation from the MOS producing school.
5. Interested Marines should contact their career planner to ensure they meet the prerequisites and to initiate the lateral move process.
6. In addition to the prerequisites listed in ref (b), all Marines submitting for lateral move must complete the commanding officer screening/interview guide and be interviewed by a 0681 Master Gunnery Sergeant, information security advisor.
