GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Background.  Reference (a) establishes Department of Defense policy directing the Secretaries of the Military Departments to develop comprehensive sports programs that provide the opportunity for qualified Service Members to prepare for and compete in authorized competitions on a voluntary basis.
2.  Application Process.  Any active duty or reserve component Marine on active orders during calendar year 2023 may apply for Athlete of the Year.  The application form can be found at https:(slash)(slash)quantico.usmc-mccs.org/recreation-fitness/recreation/sports/all-marine-sports.  Please email completed applications to ombmccssportsapplications@usmc-mccs.org.
3.  Applications must include a professional biography encompassing the athlete’s calendar year accomplishments in the sport, to include published or final results and professional USMC background.  The applicant’s commanding officer (O5 level command or higher) must endorse the application.
4.  Qualifications:
4.a.  Athletic:  Marines demonstrating athletic excellence in intramural, varsity, All-Marine, national, and international competitions are considered.  Competitions must comply with nationally recognized governing bodies (e.g., USA Track and Field) or affiliated organizations (e.g., Amateur Athletic Union).  Professional sports participation will also be considered.
4.b.  Standards and requirements:  Marines must be in good moral standing and meet all required Marine Corps physical fitness standards to be considered.
5.  All submissions are due to Headquarters Marine Corps Semper Fit no later than 5 January 2024.  The selection of the 2023 Male and Female Athletes of the Year will be announced on the Marine Corps Community Services website at https:(slash)(slash)www.usmc-mccs.org.
