GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  In accordance with Public Law 98-144 1983, the third Monday of January commemorates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday.  This year’s observance is Monday, 15 January 2024.
2.  Dr. King’s most famous message, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” touched the hearts of millions and still echoes in the minds of many today.  Dr. King’s influence was a critical factor in such milestone legislation as the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965.  His promotion of nonviolent civil disobedience led to his bestowment of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, making him the youngest recipient of that award.  Dr. King’s focus on “the content of our character,” as the goal of human interaction and judgment above immutable characteristics of race and skin color is still as pertinent today as it was in the summer of 1963.  As Marines, we thrive on such opportunities provided through equal access and treatment. The content of our character is defined by none other than our merit as Marines in and out of uniform.
3.  During the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observance, commanders are encouraged to make time to recognize and celebrate Dr. King’s life and contributions to this country. Commanders are further encouraged to conduct programs and promote participation in observance events within their units and across their local communities.
4.  The Marine Corps remains committed to promoting the values we defend and treating everyone with dignity and respect.  As such, the Marine Corps derives strength through teamwork and integrity.  We are also dedicated to promoting a professional environment that enhances personal and professional development and enables Marines to reach their full potential.
5. Release authorized by Lieutenant General James F. Glynn, Deputy Commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.//
