SUBJ/GOLD STAR MOTHER’S AND FAMILY’S DAY MESSAGE 2024//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. In 1936, President Roosevelt designated the last
Sunday of September as National Gold Star Mother’s Day to honor the
mothers of deceased service members. Now known as Gold Star
Mother’s and Family's Day, it is an important day of remembrance for
all of us to honor our Gold Star Families – those who bear the
enduring cost of their loved one’s selfless service. No Marine
should ever forget our comrades who sacrificed so much for our
nation and each other, nor should they forget the families who raised
them with the courage to commit to a life of service.
2. On Sunday, 29 September, I ask all Marines to pause and reflect
on the sacrifices made by our Gold Star Families. We express our
deepest gratitude and respect for their enduring strength and
resilience. By acknowledging their sacrifice and honoring their
loved ones’ commitment to the Marine Corps, we reaffirm the values
their Marines fought to preserve and the freedom they helped secure.
3. To all our Gold Star Mothers and Families, the Marine Corps is
committed to holding on to the memories of our fallen Marines,
taking inspiration from their courageous example. You and your
Marine remain in our hearts and prayers as we remain Always
Faithful.
4. Semper Fidelis, Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
