MSGID/GENADMIN/CMC WASHINGTON DC//
SUBJ/UNITED STATES COAST GUARD 235TH BIRTHDAY//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. On behalf of the United States Marine Corps, I
salute the United States Coast Guard, our Nation’s oldest continuous
seagoing service, on the occasion of your 235th anniversary.
2. Since the Coast Guard’s founding by Alexander Hamilton on 4
August 1790, you and your forebearers have ensured the Nation’s
safety and security by saving lives, standing vigilant over American
shores, and guarding U.S. interests overseas. Always, your actions
have embodied the Coast Guard’s core values of honor, respect, and
devotion to duty.
3. The Marine Corps has been proud to stand alongside the Coast
Guard throughout its 235 years. Fifty-nine years ago in South
Vietnam, U.S. Marines served with the Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, and
Republic of Vietnam Marines to conduct a successful large-scale
amphibious raid in Operation Jackstay. Thirty years ago, Soldiers,
Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen provided emergency humanitarian
assistance to Cuban and Haitian migrants as part of Joint Task Force
160, with Marines returning to their traditional duty as shipboard
security but aboard Coast Guard cutters. Since then, the maritime
services have conducted joint exercises and validated their ability
to operate together effectively, thereby demonstrating teamwork in
America's commitment to regional security. Happy 235th
Birthday, and Semper Paratus!
4. Semper Fidelis, Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
