SUBJ/MEMORIAL DAY MESSAGE 2026//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Memorial Day is a National Day of Remembrance—a
time for us to commemorate the brave men and women who laid down
their lives in defense of our Nation, our freedoms, and our way of
life.  As we observe this day, we must honor the legacy of those who
came before us and extend our deepest gratitude to the families who
bear the quiet, enduring weight of their loss.
2.  Since the founding of our Republic, Americans from every
generation have answered the call to serve, knowing the cost could
be profound.  As we approach the 250th anniversary of our Nation’s
independence, we are reminded that our enduring liberties are
underwritten by the extreme hardships and sacrifices of those who
have worn the cloth of our Nation.  Their resolute courage, selfless
service, and steadfast dedication to our founding ideals will
forever be inscribed in the history of our Nation.
3.  Memorial Day is not only a time for remembrance, but a call to
action.  As Marines, it is our sacred duty to ensure that the legacy
of our fallen heroes lives on through our conduct, our commitment,
and our gratitude.  We must ensure that their stories are never
forgotten and the ideals they fought for continue to guide our
mission and our character every day.
4.  I ask that you stay safe and look out for one another.  You are
the living tribute to our fallen—honor their memory through your
actions and return ready to continue the mission of the Corps.
5.  Semper Fidelis, Eric M. Smith, General, U.S. Marine Corps,
Commandant of the Marine Corps.//
