SUBJ/2D MARINE AIRCRAFT WING ANNIVERSARY//
GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  On behalf of the entire Marine Corps, it is my
privilege to recognize the 85th anniversary of 2d Marine Aircraft
Wing (2d MAW) and the legacy it carries.
2.  After the Wing's establishment on 10 July 1941, the Marines and
Sailors of 2d MAW began building a record epitomizing aviation
excellence in the South Pacific.  Following World War II, 2d MAW
established its home at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point,
anchoring its enduring role as the aviation combat element for 
II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF).  In the decades that 
followed, the Wing answered the Nation's call across major 
conflicts, deploying its groups and squadrons in support of 
operations during the Vietnam War, OPERATION DESERT STORM, and the 
Global War on Terrorism.  For 85 years, it has earned a reputation 
for delivering reliable, responsive, and effective aviation combat 
power when and where it mattered.
3.  Today, 2d MAW remains a critical part of a Marine Corps that is
prepared to fight tonight.  The Wing provides combat-ready aviation
forces that enable II MEF operations and support naval integration
with fleet partners.  Elements from 2d MAW are forward deployed
across SOUTHCOM, EUCOM, and CENTCOM theaters in support of combatant
commander requirements.  True to its motto, "Second to None," 2d MAW
reflects the standard expected across our Corps.
