GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  THE REFERENCE SOLICITED MARINE CORPS NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2012 NAVY LEAGUE SEA SERVICE AWARDS.  THE NAVY LEAGUE OF THE UNITED STATES (NLUS) IS A NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF MORE THAN 60,000 MEMBERS AND MORE THAN 270 COUNCILS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND OVERSEAS.  EACH YEAR, NLUS PRESENTS AWARDS IN RECOGNITION OF OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENTS IN LEADERSHIP, MARITIME AFFAIRS, SCIENTIFIC PROGRESS, ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE, LOGISTICS COMPETENCE, EXCELLENCE IN INTELLIGENCE, AND SERVICE TO COMMUNITY AND COUNTRY.  ALL ACTIVE AND RESERVE NAVY AND MARINE CORPS PERSONNEL ARE ELIGIBLE.
2.  THIS YEAR'S MARINE CORPS RECIPIENTS OF THE NAVY LEAGUE SEA SERVICE AWARDS ARE:
    A.  THE LIEUTENANT GENERAL JOHN A. LEJEUNE AWARD FOR INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP:  CAPTAIN BYRON J. OWEN, 3D MARINE DIVISION, III MEF, MARFORPAC.
    B.  THE GENERAL GERALD C. THOMAS AWARD FOR INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP: MASTER SERGEANT JASON M. BRUCE, 3D MARINE DIVISION, III MEF, MARFORPAC.
    C.  THE GENERAL HOLLAND M. SMITH AWARD FOR OPERATIONAL COMPETENCE: GUNNERY SERGEANT MICHAEL L. NEATHAWK, 3D MLG, III MEF, MARFORPAC.
    D.  THE ADMIRAL BEN MOREELL AWARD FOR LOGISTICS COMPETENCE (ENLISTED):  STAFF SERGEANT ERICK M. LANDERS, 2D MLG, II MEF, MARFORCOM.
    E.  THE ALFRED THAYER MAHAN AWARD FOR LITERARY ACHIEVEMENT: SERGEANT ERICK JOHN J. HAWLEY, SOI EAST, TECOM.
    F.  THE CAPTAIN WINIFRED QUICK COLLINS AWARD FOR INSPIRATIONAL LEADERSHIP (OFFICER):  CAPTAIN COURTNEY E. SLAFTER, 1ST MAW, III MEF, MARFORPAC.
    G.  THE REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM S. PARSONS AWARD FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL PROGRESS:  MAJOR BILLY J. SHORT JR., OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH.
3.  ALL NOMINEES FOR THIS AWARDS PROGRAM ARE COMMENDED FOR THEIR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE MARINE CORPS AND THEIR COMMUNITY. THE COMPETITION WAS EXCEPTIONALLY KEEN.
4.  AWARDS WILL BE PRESENTED AT THE NAVY LEAGUE'S ANNUAL CONVENTION IN HONOLULU, HAWAII, FROM 21-24 JUN 2012.  THE NAVY LEAGUE WILL COVER ALL LODGING AND MEAL EXPENSES FOR AWARD RECIPIENTS, PLUS ONE GUEST.  TRAVEL COSTS WILL NOT BE COVERED BY THE LEAGUE.  USING THIS MESSAGE AS A REFERENCE, COMMANDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ISSUE TEMPORARY ADDITIONAL DUTY ORDERS SO AWARD RECIPIENTS MAY ATTEND THE NAVY LEAGUE'S ANNUAL CONVENTION.  FOR ADDITIONAL LOGISTICS INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROGRAM, POINT OF CONTACT IS STACY MCFARLAND OF THE NAVY LEAGUE AT TEL:  703-312-1554 OR EMAIL:  SMCFARLAND@NAVYLEAGUE.ORG.
5.  AWARD RECIPIENTS ARE REMINDED THAT IF THE VALUE OF THE TRAVEL BENEFITS RECEIVED FROM THE NAVY LEAGUE EXCEEDS 305 DOLLARS, THEY MUST REPORT ACCEPTANCE UPON COMPLETION OF THE TRAVEL TO THEIR LOCAL STAFF JUDGE ADVOCATE (SJA).  LOCAL SJA MUST, IN TURN, REPORT THIS INFORMATION TO HQMC JUDGE ADVOCATE DIVISION'S CODE JAR FOR SEMI-ANNUAL DOD REPORTING PURPOSES.  SF 326 IS AUTHORIZED FOR USE FOR THIS REPORT.
