REF/A/DOC/NAVMC 2691/YMD:19800828//
AMPN/REF A IS THE CANCELLED DRILL AND CEREMONIES MANUAL)//
RMKS/1. PURPOSE. THIS MARADMIN ANNOUNCES THE ESTABLISHMENT
OF THE NEW MARINE CORPS DRILL AND CEREMONIES ORDER. MARINE CORPS
PROWESS IN DRILL AND CEREMONIES HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. FOR
OVER 200 YEARS MARINES HAVE MARCHED IN UNISON THROUGHOUT THE GLOBE.
WHETHER STANDING ON PARADE/REVIEW, OR MARCHING IN LONG LINES TOWARDS
WAR TIME OBJECTIVES, THE ABILITY TO QUICKLY ASSIMILATE DIRECTION
CHANGE AND FORMATIONS HAS PROVEN TO DEFINE THE MARINE WARFIGHTER.
2. DISCUSSION. CURRENT TRANSITIONS HAVE GIVEN RISE TO MANY
VARIATIONS OF HOW MARINES SHOULD PERFORM INDIVIDUAL AND UNIT
MOVEMENTS. AS THE MARINE CORPS TRANSITIONS INTO THE 21ST CENTURY,
WE MUST CONTINUE TO CAPTURE THOSE TIMELESS TRADITIONS THAT
DIFFERENTIATE US FROM OUR SISTER SERVICES, AND MAKE AMERICA PROUD
OF HER MARINES.
3. MARINES EVERYWHERE, UPON PUBLICATION OF MARINE CORPS ORDER
P5060.20 WILL CONTINUE TO BE BETTER PREPARED AND CAPABLE OF
CONDUCTING AND TEACHING CLOSE ORDER DRILL. MARINE CORPS ORDER
P5060.20 HAS EVOLVED INTO A PREMIER TEACHING TOOL, AS WELL AS A
SPECIFICALLY FOCUSED AND DESIGNED POLICY.
4. MANY COUNTLESS HOURS OF PREPARATION, THOUGHT, AND SOMETIMES
HEATED DISCUSSIONS HAVE GONE INTO THIS EVOLUTION, REDUCING THE
POTENTIAL FOR MIS-INTERPRETATION OF OUR MARINES' ABILITIES TO PERFORM
AND CONDUCT DRILL AND CEREMONIES.
5. AS OF THE DATE OF THE PUBLICATION OF THIS MESSAGE, MCO P5060.20
IS BEING DISTRIBUTED VIA THE MARINE CORPS PUBLICATIONS DISTRIBUTION
SYSTEM, AND IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING ON THE MARIE CORPS'
WEB SITE WWW.USMC.MIL IN TWO PARTS.
6. ACTION. COMMANDERS AT RECRUIT TRAINING DEPOTS, AND DIRECTORS OF
STAFF NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER ACADEMIES, ARE TO ENSURE CHANGES IN
TEACHING DRILL AND CEREMONIES ARE EXPEDITIOUSLY TRANSITIONED INTO
PERIODS OF INSTRUCTION AND EXAMINATIONS.
7. MARINES EVERYWHERE IN OUR CORPS WILL FEEL THE IMPACT OF THIS
ORDER. WHEN TRANSITIONING FROM DUTY STATION TO DUTY STATION,
MARINES WILL CONTINUE TO BE FULLY CAPABLE OF ASSIMILATING EASILY
INTO THEIR NEW COMMAND.
8. THIS ORDER IS APPLICABLE TO THE MARINE CORPS RESERVE.//
