GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Since the inception of “National Volunteer Week” in 1974, volunteerism has grown exponentially, culminating in the month of April being established as “National Volunteer” month.  Community involvement is one of the three components of the Single Marine Program (SMP).  Single Marines and Sailors volunteer countless hours each year, benefiting both Marine Corps installations and adjacent communities alike.
2.  In an effort to demonstrate support for local communities and to provide volunteer opportunities, the SMP “Day of Service” is scheduled for Friday, 22 April 2016.  All commands are invited to participate, with the emphasis on allowing single Marines and Sailors the opportunity to contribute to this initiative.  Therefore, it is requested that commanders support this endeavor.
3.  The SMP “Day of Service” sites may take place on or off installations, as Marines historically contribute to their various communities.  SMP representatives are encouraged to build partnerships with local community organizations to create opportunities and strengthen bonds between Marines, Sailors, and local civilians.  For specific information, contact the local installation SMP coordinator.
