GENTEXT/REMARKS/1.  Since 1981, Congress has identified October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The FY17 theme is, “Speak Up: Be Part of the Solution.”  Domestic violence is inconsistent with Marine Corps standards of conduct and core values. No one deserves to be abused and anyone can be a victim.  All Marines play an important role in upholding core values that support safe, healthy relationships for all community members.
2.  Leaders are instrumental in making it clear in word and deed that domestic abuse is unacceptable, and it is not tolerated in the United States Marine Corps.  Early intervention can prevent domestic abuse.  Encourage Marines and their family members to reach out to available resources before issues escalate.  The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is available to help Marines and their family members develop healthy communication skills, address relationship challenges, and build resiliency.
3.  Installations and communities offer many resources to address domestic abuse and other relationship issues including: FAP, Community Counseling Program, Chaplains, Military Provost Office, Military OneSource (www.militaryonesource.com, 800-342-9647), the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233), and the Marine Corps DSTRESS Line (877-476-7734).
4.  This MARADMIN is applicable to the Marine Corps Total Force and expires one year from the date published.
