GRISSOM AIR RESERVE BASE, Ind., -- Six KC-135R Stratotankers from the 916th Air Refueling Wing at Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base, near Goldsboro, N.C., arrived at Grissom ARB Thursday to take shelter from Tropical Storm Hanna.
The aircraft and crews began arriving Thursday morning to avoid the storm that is currently in the Atlantic and headed towards the East Cost.
Their arrival is part of a plan that is already in place to shelter aircraft from potentially dangerous natural disasters and situations. Grissom is the primary or alternate evacuation site for a number of other locations on the East Coast.
Other aircraft may also opt to shelter at Grissom as part of the plan, and base personnel are in contact with those units for updates as the storm progresses toward the coast.
Grissom is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing, the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command.
