CAMP COURTNEY, OKINAWA, JAPAN -- Sweat drips off the face of a leader as he addresses his troops. The day has been long but the power of his voice resonates among the men entrusted under his care.
“Every man that has been to the edge of the world will say it is better to be a wolf for a day then to live forever as a sheep,” said Lt. Col. Richard Hansen, the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion commanding officer.
Hansen spoke to the battalion following the completion of the annual 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion Warrior Challenge here December 15, 2017. The challenge is a timed event that is conducted in remembrance of those killed or missing in action from the battalion.
“We still remember our brothers who came before us and the sacrifices that they made, said Master Sgt. Mickey Eaton, the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion training chief. “I think it’s important that we remember them.”
Marines from all over the battalion participated in the event, even Marines from supporting establishments. The event consisted of 8 events. The events included the basic skills and knowledge of the reconnaissance operations field.
The Marines completed the event, and the fastest team received a handmade recon paddle and bragging rights. The event concluded with the Marines reminiscing the actions of their fallen brothers.
