CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii -- The Camp Smith Raiders defeated Combat Logistics Battalion 3 Warriors 12-6 during a 2008 Intramural Football League game at Bordelon Field here Oct. 1.
The crowd became ecstatic in the third quarter when the Raiders recovered the ball on a fumble and went for a 20-yard pass that was caught and run in for a touchdown by Freddie Williams, Raiders wide receiver.
The first quarter was uneventful as both teams managed to thwart each other’s attempts to get into the end zone, keeping the crowd in suspense.
Joshua Brown, Warriors wide receiver, scored the first touchdown of the night deep in the second quarter as he broke through the Raiders’ defensive line and ran for the end zone.
The Warriors failed at a field goal attempt, keeping the score at 6-0 at halftime.
The Raiders kicked off in the third quarter.
After the Warriors’ failed advance toward the end zone, Williams ran in the ball for a touchdown after a 20-yard pass when he recovered the ball from a fumble.
The third quarter ended with a tie after a failed two-point conversion.
“It was amazing,” said Marvin A. Carmona, a Raiders supporter standing on the sidelines. “It was like a Brett Favre throw!”
The crowd went wild in the fourth quarter when Deshaun Brandy, Raiders safety, thunderously smashed an opponent, throwing the crowd and his fellow teammates into a frenzy.
“Its all heart, that’s all the game is,” said Brandy.
Fans observing the game became anxious as neither team seemed close to scoring halfway into the fourth quarter, leaving open the possibility of going into overtime.
Finally Williams made another successful run for the end zone, and after missing a two-point conversion attempt, the score was 12-6.
The Warriors made desperate ineffective attempts to get the ball into the end zone, leaving the Raiders to claim the 12-6 victory for the night.
“We started off on the wrong foot, but we pulled together in the end,” said Carson Peapealalo, Raiders head coach.
The Warriors accepted their loss gracefully.
“We played awesome,” said Robert Walston, Warriors head coach. “We just missed a few steps on offense. They played well, and we’ll see them again.”
Sgt. Maj. James Roberts, Headquarters and Service Battalion Sgt. Maj., watched from the sidelines as the Raiders pulled off their exhilarating success.
“Both teams came out real strong,” said Roberts. “They gave us a tough game, but we kept pushing on.”
Roberts was pleased with the turnout of fans cheering on the teams.
“It’s good to see everyone out here supporting their teams,” Roberts said.
