Weapons and Field Training Battalion Raiders discovered there is nothing beautiful about being defeated by the 1st Marine Logistics Groups Beasts’ during the USAA Pendleton Cup Football League game at Camp Pendleton’s Paige Field house, Oct. 5. As rain-covered helmets clashed throughout the night, it was the Beasts who defeated the Raiders 18 to 7, thanks to their relentless and seemingly impermeable defense.
The Beast’s defensive end Sean Tate and safety Jarmarcus Thomas, produced four interceptions and two back-to-back safeties and lead their team to its victory.
“We go out there and do our best to keep them other team as far away from our goal line as possible and tonight we did just that,” said Tate after the game. “There’s no way I can take all the credit for tonight’s win, we come as a team we win as a team.”
Tate and Jarmarcus helped bring home the victory by intercepting two passes, one of which Tate ran back for a touchdown and gave them the lead in the second half.
“Miramar came out and really showed us how well their defense is,” said Chris Seamster, quarterback, Raiders. “We now know what they bring to the table and we look forward to seeing them later in the season for another game.”
At the end of the game, the two teams expressed good sportsmanship with a time-honored handshake at the 50-yard line; and before stepping off the field, the teams took a moment and prayed for their fellow warriors fighting overseas.
“The teams take this league seriously,” said Tom Fisher, athletic director, Marine Corps Community Services. “They train hard in afternoon, they practice harder in the evening and they come out and play football.”
The season will conclude in November and the league’s champion will travel to Twentynine Palms for the annual Best of the West showdown.
