More than 900 Christmas trees were given out to the military families of Camp Pendleton during the 6th annual Trees for Troops giveaway at the base’s San Onofre Community Center and Mainside Fire Station, Dec. 2.

Trees for Troops is a program that was initiated by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation in 2005. Each year, the organization reaches out to Christmas tree growers across the United States who then generously provides fresh cut trees to military families. Since its inception, the program has provided Christmas trees to more than 67,000 military families at 50 military bases and to units in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Middle East and the 5th Fleet in the Gulf.

“The key to success in helping Marine Corps Community Services plan this event was the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx partnering to advance the spirit of Christmas for Marines, sailors and family members,” said Jennifer Spiekhout, event coordinator, MCCS Camp Pendleton.

During the event 30,000 pounds of trees were passed out to nearly 600 families at the Mainside location alone. FedEx donated their services by personally driving the trees on base and making sure they reached their destination.

“The amount of trees that were collected for this year’s donation is quite amazing,” said Lance Cpl. Chad Clodfelter, legal service specialist, Headquarter Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. “Being given a Christmas tree for free really goes to show how much our nation’s people and organizations care about military families.”

This year, consumers also had to opportunity to participate in the program by purchasing and donating a tree at more than 40 farms and retail lot locations.

“(The Marines and I) would just like to thank all who put their hard work and dedication into making this day possible,” said Col. James A. Hogberg, commanding officer, Headquarter Support Battalion, MCB Camp Pendleton. “The support we receive from our surrounding communities is one of our most valuable assets.”

Although the Christmas tree giveaway was the main attraction at the event, attendees were also treated to bouncy houses, cookie decorating, magicians, face painting, lots of gifts and an opportunity for the children to sit with Santa and tell him their Christmas wishes.

“It feels great to see the memories we are making,” said Spiekhout. “It is such joy to be part of giving during the Christmas season. The best part is seeing the families walk out with a Christmas tree and big smiles and knowing how much this means to our families.”
