New Orleans -- Marine administrative message 133/15 announces April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
For 32 years, child abuse and neglect awareness activities have been promoted around the country during April. The theme for 2015 is "Children deserve to be protected.” Topics of focus include knowing the warning signs, helping to stop child abuse before it starts and having the courage to speak up.
If an individual suspects child abuse, it is important to report those suspicions. Speaking up may protect the child and connect the family with needed help and support. Leaders should make it understood that child abuse and neglect are preventable, and helpful resources are available.
To report suspicions of child abuse or neglect, contact the Family Advocacy Program, local child protective services or local law enforcement. Additional resources available include community counseling programs, the Department of Defense Child Safety Hotline (877-790-1197), the Marine Corps Distress Line (877-476-7734) and Military OneSource. These resources provide support specific to children and include information on child care resources, parenting and stress management.
Child abuse prevention is not exclusive to the month of April and keeping children safe is everyone's responsibility at all times.
