DAKAR, Senegal -- A U.S. Marine saved a Senegalese man from drowning last night near a busy
restaurant.
At 8 p.m. Aug. 28, U.S. Marine Cpl. Matthew A. Sprankle
saw a man struggling to keep his head above water about 150 meters from the
shore, while eating at a local restaurant with a group of Marines.
After
witnessing an unsuccessful rescue attempt from another Senegalese, Sprankle
grabbed a flotation device and jumped from the pier and swam to his location.
Sprankle returned to shore with the Senegalese man. No medical attention
was required for Sprankle or the man.
U.S. Marines and sailors with
Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response-Africa Detachment A
are currently in Dakar conducting partner-nation training with the Senegalese
military.
