June 5, 2014 -- An AV-8B Harrier from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma crashed in Imperial City, Calif. at approximately 4:20 p.m. yesterday.
The pilot ejected safely, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and has subsequently been released from the hospital. We are thankful for the support that our neighbors in Imperial City displayed to assist the pilot and military officials on scene.
According to Imperial City officials, eight homes were evacuated with two destroyed and one heavily damaged. There have been no reports of civilian injuries. Last night, five homes were cleared and those families were allowed to return. Marine Corps officials are working to assist those citizens impacted by this accident.
Local authorities and Marine officials are on the scene ensuring the site remains safe and secure. The aircraft was on a training flight and carrying no ordnance. However, aircraft components and fuel are considered hazardous materials and the Marine Corps has a team of experts on site to conduct clean-up operations.
Safety is always one of our primary concerns. A thorough investigation is already underway to determine the cause of the crash.
As part of the community near El Centro, the safety of the people who live and work in the area are of utmost importance to us.
