3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Helicopters Fight San Diego Fires

3rd Marine Aircraft Wing continued firefighting operations throughout San Diego County today with 21 aircraft equipped with
water dispensing buckets.

3rd MAW flew approximately 30 hours yesterday and delivered more than 30,000 gallons of water tothe Tomahawk Fire. Today, with double the aircraft, 3rd MAW flew approximately 80 hours and delivered more than 72,000 gallons of water to needed areas on Camp Pendleton and throughout San Diego County. This included support to the Cocos Fire near San Marcos.

3rd MAW aircraft that participated included (4) UH-1Y Venom/Super Hueys, (10) CH-46E Sea Knights and (7) CH-53E Super Stallions. The UH-1Y and CH-46E can transport a bucket with a maximum capacity of 325 gallons, while the CH-53E can carry a 900-gallon bucket to assist in the firefighting efforts.
