Reference (a) established the MGIB-R for individuals who incurred a 6-year inactive duty training (IDT) obligation in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) by enlistment, reenlistment, or extension of duty after 30 June 1985.

After 30 September 1990, new MGIB-R educational benefits are available to individuals who exercise a new 6-year IDT obligation by enlistment, reenlistment, or extension of obligation in the SMCR.
