Earth Day: Marine Corps Installations Command’s Environmental Readiness is Mission Readiness

Every year, increasingly erratic and unpredictable climate forces are threatening Marine Corps installations and capabilities. Typhoon Mawar made this clear less than a year ago when it struck Guam – scattering debris on runways and shuttering access to essential services across the island – or more recently in California when stormwater washed out roads at San Onofre Beach near Marine Corps Base (MCB) Pendleton. More than five years later, the Marine Corps is still rebuilding from 2018’s Hurricane Florence, which caused $3.6 billion in damage to installations on the east coast of the United States.

Targets! Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz Installs Range Targets

Despite Typhoon Mawar’s destruction across the island, the ongoing enhancements at the Mason Live Fire Training Range Complex are in full swing. Throughout May to July, Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz is installing static and moving targets on two of its four ranges at the Mason range complex. As their names suggest, automated, moving targets test the shooter’s ability to lead and hit a target moving at different speeds, and static targets hone the basic, essential elements of marksmanship. Camp Lejeune awarded Environmental Restoration Award by Secretaries of Defense and Navy

For the second year in a row, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Environmental Management Division was recently awarded the 2022 Secretary of the Navy Environmental Award for “Environmental Restoration, Installation” as well as the 2022 Secretary of Defense award in the same category. Monk seals take MCBH

In June 2021, the Hawaiian monk seal pup Lōliʻi was transferred to Marine Corps Base Hawaii for protection from crowds on Waikiki beach. Although a baby seal may sound like a great tourist attraction, the conservation and protection of marine wildlife is important, and that includes minimizing the chances of young, curious monk seals becoming habituated to people.
