IE SHIMA, OKINAWA, Japan –A “smokey” surface-to-air missile is launched April 12 during training on Ie Shima. Smokey SAMs were designed to give off the a distinct heat signature when launched, allowing for realistic evasion training for pilots. The smokey SAM is harmless, as it is made of foam.
