Staff Sgt. Kevin Gebo, a U.S. Army Band Pershing’s Own bugler, plays Taps for the veterans and the crowd, who gathered during a wreath laying ceremony in honor of the veterans of the Battle of Okinawa at the World War II Memorial in Washington April 1, 2015. On April 1, 1945, allied forces invaded the island of Okinawa. The battle lasted 82 days amassing high totals of allied, Japanese and civilian casualties.

Sgt. Maj. Justin Lehew, the Training and Education Command Sergeant Major, speaks to a few Marine during the start of the Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sand Missile Range, New Mexico March 22. The event is the 73rd commemoration of the Bataan Death March when more than 60,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war endured a 60-mile forced march. These men endured severe physical abuse at the hands of their captors the Japanese Imperial army, many succumbing to the wounds and abuse they endured on the trek.

The museum is home of the International Space Hall of Fame pays tribute to all who dedicated their lives to space exploration or at least contributed to the overall ideal.

These dunes of white spread for 200 miles in all directions and can be seen from space. The sand is held in place do to the large underground lake, so these pristine dunes never shift outside of the circumference of this white blemish on the face of the planet.

The evening included a sunset memorial, 21-gun salute, banquet and a video message for veterans from Commandant of the Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford. “Your legacy is the young men and women who use your example of courage and commitment to inspire them to confront and overcome the challenges that they face today … I pledge that today’s Marines will keep the spirit of Iwo Jima alive,” said Dunford.
