John Holladay, a World War II Marine Raider who was killed in action in 1943, as they drive into the National Cemetery in Florence, S.C., where Holladay was laid to rest April 4, 2016. During World War II, Holladay was assigned to Company B, 1st Marine Raider Battalion, 1st Marine Raider Regiment, who fought battles against Japanese positions along the Pacific front where he was killed.

Gunnery Sgt. Clemente Batista, Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of the funeral detail for Sgt. John C. Holladay, hands an American flag to Jack Holladay, the nephew of Sgt. Holladay, a World War II Marine Raider who was killed in action in 1943. After 73 years, Holladay’s remains were recently recovered and returned to his hometown of Florence, S.C., April 4, 2016. Jack said that during this process he has received nothing but support from the local community and the Marine Corps.

Mabus visited Parris Island to see firsthand how young men and women from across the country are transformed into United States Marines. Recruit training was consolidated under Recruit Training Regiment in 1986, and since then, all those desiring to complete recruit training must follow the same training program of instruction, and must complete the same graduation requirements.

Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 50 percent of male recruits and 100 percent of female recruits in the Marine Corps.

Ella Jackson, a 93-year-old widow, receives a Congressional Gold Medal replica in lieu of her late husband, Master Sgt. George Jackson, in Port Royal, S.C., Oct. 2. George Jackson enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and retired after 27 years of service in 1969. Brigadier General Terry Williams, the first African-American commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, presented Jackson with the medal at a ceremony. In 2012, congress awarded the Montford Point Marines with the Congressional Gold Medal, the United States' highest civilian award bestowed by congress.
