Assault amphibious vehicle operations were successfully conducted in the slipway at the Blount Island Command in Jacksonville, Fla., Thursday. A total of nine AAVs splashed from Bobo Class Ship USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams, marking the first time since 1999 that tracks have splashed from a Maritime Prepositioning Force ship. The objective of the AAV operation was to demonstrate and evaluate the operational capability to launch AAVs from an MPF ship. The objective was fully achieved. Another AAV operation on a much larger scale is planned during the month of August.

Pfc. Colton Welker and Lance Cpl. Cody Grunwald hike up a hill towards their position to suppress the enemy during Range 706 for the Advanced Infantryman Course on Nov. 19. Range 706 is a combined arms range that includes mortars, machine guns, demolitions, breach clearing, and fire and movement. The Advanced Infantryman Course provides infantry qualified Marines with the training necessary to become a successful infantry squad leader, the course teaches each infantryman proper patrolling techniques, urban combat tactics, defensive tactics and offensive tactics as a squad leader.

Beedle, working with other Marines from 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment learned how to control LS3 and work it into basic formations and maneuvers during the limited technical assessment at Fort Devens. This was the first time Marines have been given control of LS3 since the Warfighting Lab began working with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the system's developer Boston Dynamics. The Warfighting Lab is working with the DARPA and Boston Dynamics to explore concepts that can potentially lighten the load of Marine units. At the request of the Government of the Philippines, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has directed U.S. Pacific Command to support U.S. Government humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan. Sanglay is a logistics and embarkation specialist with Combat Logistics Battalion 4, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force and Menchaca is an engineer equipment operator with III MEF Headquarters Group. The aircraft are with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, Marine Aircraft Group 36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III MEF. MCAS Futenma is a mission ready air station capable of continuous aviation and base operating support for tenant organizations and follow-on U.S., Allied, and United Nations forces during combat or contingency operations in the Western Pacific Theater of operations, to include U.S. Pacific Command, Marine Corps Forces Pacific and Marine Corps Installations Pacific.
