Marines from The Basic School test fire a Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon Mod 2 with a new modular ballistic sight during an operational assessment on Range 15 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., in late November. The Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity coordinated and administered the assessment, and will provide feedback from the Marines to the Marine Corps Systems Command’s SMAW Project Office.

PFC Marcus Beedle leads the mule-like robot known as the Legged Squad Support System on a patrol through open terrain at Fort Devens Mass. Beedle, working with other Marines from 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment learned how to control LS3 and work it into basic formations and maneuvers during the limited technical assessment at Fort Devens. This was the first time Marines have been given control of LS3 since the Warfighting Lab began working with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the system's developer Boston Dynamics. The Warfighting Lab is working with the DARPA and Boston Dynamics to explore concepts that can potentially lighten the load of Marine units. LS3, still in the early stages of development, is capable of carrying 400 pounds of gear and traversing terrain that wheeled and tracked vehicles cannot.

Lowell Red Arrow Head Coach Noel Dean is recognized by Marines of Recruiting Station Lansing as a 2013 Semper Fi Coach August, 29. Dean was originally presented the Semper Fi Coach award in February during the off season but the Marines and Lowell High School wanted to recognize him a second time in front of his home crowd in Lowell, Mich. Dean and the Lowell Community have raised over $800,000 since 2008 for breast cancer research through his "Pink Arrow Project".

U.S. Marines with 9th Engineer Support Battalion and U.S. Army soldiers with 96th Troop Command are working alongside soldiers with the Mongolian Armed Forces in Nalaikh district, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia during Exercise Khaan Quest 2013. Khaan Quest is a regularly scheduled, multinational exercise co-sponsored this year by U.S. Marine Corps Forces Pacific, and hosted annually by the MAF. The intent of the ongoing engineering civic action program (ENCAP) project in Nalaikh is to provide valuable training for Mongolian and U.S. armed forces by boosting their interoperability, as well as demonstrate a mutual commitment to local community.
