Marine Wing Support Squadrons 171 and 172, both currently assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, drill a hole into the ground as part of the M31 Marine Corps expeditionary arresting gear system in preparation for Valiant Shield 2014. Arresting gear is used to stop aircraft quickly in case they land on a short runway or experience an emergency. Valiant Shield is a a U.S. only exercise integrating U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army and Marine Corps assets, offering real-world joint operational experience to develop capabilities that provide a full range of options to defend U.S. interests and those of its allies and partners.

Ricardo Medrano, a mortarman with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, share stories during a break in training here, Oct. 16. Medrano was recruited by Couls and trained alongside his former recruiter during the annual Philippine Bilateral Amphibious Landing Exercise from Oct. 6 – 16. The 31st MEU and 2/3 trained alongside the Philippine Marines and soldiers for two weeks, integrating the skills gained here to strengthen interoperability in the future. The 31st MEU is the only continuously forward-deployed MEU and is the Marine Corps’ force in readiness in the Asia-Pacific region.

The task-organized detachment partnered with Guatemala authorities to disrupt illicit trafficking in the country’s coastal waters. With four Huey’s, Detachment Martillo flew over 250 detection and monitoring missions in support of Guatemalan law enforcement agencies and naval forces during the roughly two-month deployment. "We saw an immediate impact in trafficking patterns along established routes after we started flying our helos," said Col. Rob Rauenhorst, the Detachment Martillo officer-in-charge.

Croix du Sud is a multilateral exercise hosted by the French armed forces in New Caledonia, and will involve two U.S. Marine Corps platoons with III Marine Expeditionary Force, members of the FANC, and a company with the Australian Defence Force, as well as members of six other nations with varying levels of involvement. 2nd Bn., 3rd Marines, is currently assigned to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III MEF, under the unit deployment program.
