The Aviation Survival Training Center is the only water survival facility on any Marine Corps installation on the East Coast. Naval aviators are given classes on protocol and the gear they use in case of an emergency on an aircraft. The skills they learn in ASTC ensure 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, its aviators and crew members are qualified and maintain the highest state of readiness. The event ensured Marines with camp guard and the Provost Marshal’s Office are proficient in communicating with the UCPD to mitigate threats involving service members and Okinawa residents. During the training event, Camp Guard Marines patrolling the base perimeter apprehended a simulated armed intruder. PMO Marines received a notification over a radio signal and responded to rehearse turnover procedures of the intruder and escort him to the proper detainment authorities.

The equipment used in arrested landings help aircraft land within a limited distance, such as on an aircraft carrier. The Marines are expeditionary airfield systems technicians with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, MCAS Futenma, Marine Corps Installations Pacific-Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, Japan. The aircraft is with Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533, Marine Aircraft Group 31, which is currently assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program.
