U.S. Marines maneuver aboard their Light Armored Vehicle 25 during a crew served gunnery range at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, Japan, May 20, 2023. The range was executed to maintain proficiency and increase lethality of the Marines in the first island chain. The Marines and LAV are with 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, currently forward deployed in the Indo-Pacific under 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division as part of the Unit Deployment Program.

Barracks Marines stand at “ceremonial” at ease during a full honors funeral for Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Aug 25, 2022. Canley was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2018 for his actions in 1968 during the battle of Hue City, Vietnam. His award citation notes that while serving as the company gunnery sergeant for Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Sgt. Maj. Canley and his Marines fought off multiple attacks as they patrolled the city streets to relieve another company of Marines.

From Jan. 31, to Feb. 6 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam, Canley, the company gunnery sergeant assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, took command of the company, led multiple attacks against enemy-fortified positions, rushed across fire-swept terrain despite his own wounds and carried wounded Marines into Hue City, including his commanding officer, to relieve friendly forces who were surrounded.

Master Gunnery Sgt. Andrew D. McCurry assumes responsibilities as the U.S. Special Operations Command Central Command Senior Enlisted Leader, Aug. 6, 2021. McCurry is the first Marine to be selected as the CSEL of SOCCENT and the second Marine to be selected as the senior enlisted leader for a Theater Special Operations Command.
