Marines give flowers to the family of Sgt. Matthew T. Abbate during his Navy Cross award ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., Aug. 10. Abbate was posthumously awarded the medal for the actions he took on Oct. 14, 2010 in Sangin, Afghanistan during his deployment as a scout sniper with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. Abbate was killed in action in Helmand Province later that year.
