Retired Col. H. Wayne Whitten, a former Marine Composite Reconnaissance Squadron 2 pilot and author on the Cuban Missile Crisis, details on a map where VMCJ-2 flew to gather vital intelligence on the Soviet missile sites during the crisis. At an event commemorating fifty years since the Cuban Missile Crisis, Marines and civilians shared stories of life at a hangar in Havelock, N.C., Oct. 24. For their accomplishments before, during, and after the crisis, the squadron was awarded the first ever Navy Unit Citation medal not to be awarded during a time of war.
