Sgt. Maj. Steven E. Collier, incoming sergeant major for Headquarters Battalion, ceremoniously receives the Noncommissioned Officer’s Sword from the unit’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. Robert K. Maldonado, during a relief and appointment ceremony at Dewey Square, Aug. 16, 2013. Collier, who most recently served as sergeant major of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, relieved Sgt. Maj. Ansil Lewis of his post as Headquarters Battalion sergeant major. The passing of the NCO sword is a symbolic gesture of the outgoing sergeant major relinquishing leadership to the incoming sergeant major. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Nathan Knapke)
