Sgt. Kertis D. Grimmer, center right, describes the dimensions of a “snow-coffin” survival shelter to Marines with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Feb. 24 during a practical application training event as part of Exercise Forest Light 14-2 at Sekiyama Training Area in Niigata prefecture, Japan. The bilateral exercise focuses on Marines’ cold-weather survival skills along with Japan Ground Self-Defense Force members. A snow coffin is used to survive harsh winter conditions. It is built as long and as tall as the tallest member of a fire-team, with a cold sump to keep cold air away from the sleeping area. The battalion is currently assigned to 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program. Grimmer is a squad leader for the battalion.
