Carlson shovels snow away to make a pathway Feb. 24 during Exercise Forest Light 14-2 at Sekiyama Training Area in Niigata prefecture, Japan. The training for Exercise Forest Light improves cold-weather survival skills for the Marines with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, under the unit deployment program. Ellis is a platoon sergeant with the battalion. Carlson is a platoon commander with the battalion.
