Kurt Tong, left, retired Marine Lt. Gen. Lawrence F. Snowden, center, and Gen. James F. Amos walk toward the Reunion of Honor memorial March 19 during the annual Reunion of Honor ceremony on Iwo To, formerly known as Iwo Jima. “We are here for the purpose of honoring and saluting the dead on both sides,” said Snowden, who founded the Reunion of Honor in 1995. The ceremony marked the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Tong is the deputy chief of mission for the U.S. Embassy in Japan, and Amos is commandant of the Marine Corps.
