Retired U.S. Army Air Corps Lt. Col. Raymond Russell Kelly, right, shakes hands with U.S. Marine Sgt. Andre M. Thomas June 12 at the historic North Field, Tinian, after the 70th Anniversary Reunion of Honor ceremony. The ceremony is part of a weeklong celebration paying tribute to both American and Japanese veterans of the battles of Saipan and Tinian during World War II. Kelly was the distinguished guest of honor at the ceremony as he was stationed at Tinian during the war. Kelly took part in more than 35 missions over Japan and was happy to report that although his crew’s aircraft was badly damaged during their missions, neither he nor his crew members were harmed. Kelly was a radar operator with the 482nd Squadron, 505th Bomb Group, 313th Bomb Wing, stationed at Tinian's North Field and is a resident of Santa Rosa, Calif. Thomas is an automotive organizational technician with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and a native of Miami, Florida. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl.
