Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Wheeler places an ankle brace on a patient during a mass casualty drill Sept. 10 on Tinian. The purpose behind the drill is to test the capabilities of the field’s medical staff by challenging them with varying scenarios to test their knowledge and abilities. The corpsmen are on the island as part of Exercise Valiant Shield 2014, a biennial exercise which focuses on training that enables real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces. Wheeler is a hospital corpsman with Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl.
