Recruit Brandon M. Hurd, Platoon 3223, provides cover while his fire team advances their position during the Bayonet Assault Course at Edson Range, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Sept. 10. The Crucible is a 54-hour event where recruits face food and sleep deprivation to simulate the kind of stresses they would face in combat situations. Hurd is a native of Blaine, Minn., and was recruited out of Recruiting Substation Coon Rapids, Minn.
