U.S. Marine veteran William Darling, right, shakes hands with Imperial Japanese Navy veteran Kiyokazu Tsuchida during the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Peleliu ceremony Sept. 15 at Peleliu Elementary School in the Republic of Palau. The event brought together members of the Palau community, World War II veterans who served in the Battle of Peleliu, elected officials of Palau and representatives the U.S. military to honor the combatants who fought on the island during the fall of 1944. The highlight of the ceremony was when the two veterans came together after being adversaries 70 years earlier. The crowd responded with smiles and tears at the sight of the special moment.
