INDIAN OCEAN (July 24, 2015) U.S. Marine Sgt. Maj. Jorge Melendez, left and Sgt. Maj. Douglas Schaefer, right, congratulate the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s “Marine of the Week” awardee Cpl. Houston Davis aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). Melendez is the sergeant major of Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th MEU and Schaefer is the sergeant major of the 15th MEU. Davis is a member of India Company, BLT 3/1, 15th MEU and is a member of the 15th MEU Maritime Raid Force’s security element. While serving as a team leader with the security element, he acted as the primary helicopter rope-suspension techniques master for fast-rope operations, overseeing the safe insertion of 40 Marines over the course of multiple iterations under simulated combat conditions.
