U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Matthew Lundgren, commanding officer, 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, receives a plaque from Col. Yoskiyuki Goto, regimental commander, Western Army Infantry Regiment, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, March 1, 2016, during the closing ceremony of Exercise Iron Fist 2016. Exercise Iron Fist is an annual, bilateral amphibious training exercise conducted by the USMC and JGSDF is designed to improve their ability to conduct combined amphibious operations. The ceremony concluded the 11th iteration of the exercise, which will continue to provide unique opportunities for the U.S. Marines to train with their Pacific ally on U.S. soil.
