U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Ryan Flores, a crew master with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152, guides a KC-130J Hercules into a set of hot refuel pits at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 20, 2017. U.S. Marines, U.S. Sailors and Master Labor Contractors with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron fuels division conducted a proof of concept for hot refueling in order to test for safety and ensure all equipment functioned properly. Pending approval from the air station’s commanding officer and the Defense Logistics Agency, the rebuilt hot refuel pits will allow aircraft to rapidly refuel without powering down their engines, which increases operational readiness.
